Kevin Werner
Executive directorKevin Werner brings more than 25 years of federal experience with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where he served as a senior executive. Kevin has extensive experience working to connect science to application in water resources and climate in the western United States, as well as policy and organizational development in the public sector. Kevin’s work has ranged from water and climate forecasting and application to climate data and assessment work, and its role in decision making. Kevin has successfully connected science and scientists in these areas to application and decision makers. Kevin holds degrees in atmospheric science, mathematics, public administration, and political science from the University of Washington and the University of Utah.
Meagan Mauter
Research directorMeagan Mauter is an Associate Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. She directs the Water and Energy Efficiency for the Environment Lab (WE3Lab) with the mission of providing sustainable water supply in a carbon-constrained world through innovation in water treatment technology, optimization of water management practices, and redesign of water policies. Her present research seeks novel approaches to sustainably meet water supply in an energy constrained world by rethinking the policies surrounding water treatment, redefining the inputs to the treatment process, and re-envisioning the membranes in membrane-based water treatment processes.
Carol Valladao
Operations Director; Finance & Compliance DirectorCarol Valladao has served Berkeley Lab in multiple key operational management roles over more than 18 years. Valladao has managed multimillion-dollar projects from a variety of funding sources including DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy, Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, and Office of Science, and the California Energy Commission. Valladao has managed diverse teams of researchers from multiple university, national lab, and industry partners on projects from proposal development through project completion.
Peter Fiske
Engagement and Tech Translation ManagerPeter S. Fiske is the founder and Engagement and Tech Translation Manager of NAWI and the Director of the Water-Energy Resilience Research Institute (WERRI) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Prior to joining Berkeley Lab, Fiske was the Chief Executive Officer of PAX Water Technologies, Inc. from 2008 until January 2017 when it was acquired by UGSI Inc. PAX Water pioneered the use of biomimicry to develop innovative and energy-efficient technologies for the water industry. PAX Water won a number of national water industry awards, and its iconic Lily impeller technology was featured in a major design exhibit at the New York Museum of Modern Art.
Dr. Andy Jones
Regional Water Systems Topic Area LeadAt Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Dr. Andy Jones works at the interface of human and environmental systems. His research uses quantitative models and data analysis to understand human-Earth system interactions at decision-relevant scales. He collaborates with social scientists and interacts closely with stakeholders to understand how science can more effectively provide actionable insight into strategies for increasing resilience of energy, water, food, and urban systems.
Abhishek Roy
